This site started out as a personal project. It was simple, a desire to document each studio space and the artist that call it their home away from home. Asking each artist permission to be photographed in their studio with essentially no setup, just natural light and a moment out of their day. Starting out, this was to document these artists and their space to show their story and practice in pictures, that they indeed were here. With the ongoing development in the neighborhood around Blue Silo, we have long held on to the idea that we may not be here for long. That was over five years ago. Still, things are always in the air, and these old spaces in this old building, in this old part of town, surely won’t be here forever. Many artists have been here for over a decade, some just arrived in 2020. In the time of doing this project, the artists have revealed more in these honest pictures, than any traditional magazine setup can offer. As we have gotten to know each other here at Blue Silo, we’ve become a kind of family of artists. Even more recently, becoming more like an artist’s coop. The work created here and the studios that breathe creative inspiration through each wall, and for all the often quiet energy, the building will always be host to each artist’s personal story. Each studio has a character that is so reflective of the artist's personality and practice. I think we’d all like to believe that this project is an important medium to document and share a little piece [in this moment] of our history, both as a community with all those who’ve passed through trying to make their art practice a significant part of their existence, and two, as individuals, giving their part to a sort of “art-collective”. Sharing those individual stories and works created here and maybe for all time, to everyone who wants to peek inside the mind of each of these creative creatures who have been nicknamed “Siloteers”.
